The original Doge’s Palace was a square, fortress-like building with high walls, corner towers on the side nearest St. Mark’s basin, and fortified gates.

Rebuilt respectively in 1340 and 1424, the two wings of the Palace bordering St. Mark’s Basin and the Piazzetta are among the finest examples of Gothic art, the building is adorned with beautiful 14th – 15th-century capitals and corner figures.

It was the supreme magistrate of la Serenissima, the glorious Venice of the republic.

It’s the grandest of all Venetians Palaces and for centuries the only building entitled to the name palazzo. The others were simply called Cà, short for “Casa”. For nearly of the millennium, until the fall of the Republic in 1797, the Doge’s Palace was the very nerve center of La Serenissima, the seat of its government and home to its rules, strategically situated on the lagoon at the point where Venice surveys the Adriatic.
